Welcome to the Network of Episcopal Churches in Retirement Environments. This is a brand new blog site that was created to extend a conversation begun in the Diocese of Olympia between several churches that are located in areas that are attractive places to retire. These venues present remarkable opportunities for the Episcopal Church and its unique place in the spectrum of American Christian denominations.
We are discovering that small towns across the country are becomming highly desirable as retirement destinations due to moderate real estate costs, quality of life, and unique local geography.
There are also select areas in larger cities that are finding an influx of retirement age individuals and couples who want a distinctly urban lifestyle.
Many congregations in these areas are experiencing vitality and growth rather than stagnation and decline. The older population has time, energy and faith that has been strengthened over many years of spiritual pilgrimage.
This is not your grandmother’s church.
This does not fit the stereotype of “God’s waiting room”
This is an emerging church that is dynamic, exciting and vibrant.
This network is a place for us to share “what works” in ministry and to build up our communities of faith in outreach to people who are looking for an authentic spiritual life within the tradition, liturgy and community of an Episcopal congregation.
